Peace Resolution

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a peace keeping force of 26,000 for Darfur. Most of this force is not expected to be on the ground until 2008, however. The U.N. will have overall control, but Gen. Martin Agwai of Nigeria will be in charge of day to day operations. The force is said to have a "predominantly African character" the way Sudan demanded. The U.S. Ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, says that "the United States will move for the swift adoption of unilateral and multilateral measures" if Sudan refuses to comply with the new resolution. This means that the U.S. will step in by themselves and with the help of other countries if Sudan backs out or doesn't honor the resolution (again). A full report can be found here.

Spielberg May Quit Olympics

Film director Steven Spielberg may quit his position as artistic advisor to the 2008 Beijing Olympics if China does not take a harder line against Sudan over Darfur, ABC News reported. China, a huge investor in Sudan's oil industry, has resisted sending U.N. peacekeepers to the country's troubled Darfur region. Human rights groups and other critics have accused China and others of breaching international rules and fanning bloodshed by selling Sudan weapons that have been diverted to Darfur. "Steven will make a determination in the next few weeks regarding his work with the Chinese. Our main interest is ending the genocide. No one is clear on the best way to do this," Spielberg's spokesman Andy Spahn told abcnews.com in an article on its Web site on Friday. "All options were on the table," Spahn told the Web site, including quitting, but his decision would depend on an anticipated statement on Sudan by Beijing in the coming days. "We expect to hear something from the Chinese government sometime soon, very soon. We're pretty far down the road in discussions and then we'll decide if the path is productive or not and then consider other options," Spahn told abcnews.com.

Darfur Scores

The Genocide Intervention Network has unveiled it's new project, Darfur Scores. Darfur Scores is a site that lets visitors see where their Congress members stand on the genocide. Each representative and senator receives a letter grade and "report card" detailing what pieces of Darfur-related legislation they have voted in favor of or against and other information about the Congressperson pertaining to the genocide.

A call to action: HP fans against genocide in Darfur
A call to action: HP fans against genocide in Darfur As many of you know or have read, Darfur, in the Sudan region of Africa, is currently under a horrendous regime of genocide and brutality. It's allowed to continue for many reasons, a chief one among them being the willingness of leaders to do nothing about it. That's where Harry Potter fans come in.

The Save Darfur Coalition is doing a new section called Darfur Heroes. I was stunned when they asked me to write a "blog" of my experience with Stroll for Sudan. The following is what I submitted. You can also visit the Darfur Heroes site here.

"Hi! My name is Angelica Schwartz and I am the event coordinator of Stroll for Sudan , a youth-powered walk-a-thon with headquarters in Beloit , Wisconsin . I’m a 15-years-old, soon-to-be high school sophomore and was blessed to be able to work with a group of talented and dedicated young people this past year. They were the foundation of this event, and its success is due largely to their huge efforts.

It all started around December 2006. That’s when I saw a Save Darfur commercial while channel surfing one afternoon. I was astounded that I had never heard of the crisis in Darfur and quickly began searching for more information on the web. I started with Save Darfur’s site and branched out from there. The more I learned, the more outraged I became. But what could I do? I began bouncing ideas off of my parents and friends. We eventually came up with the idea of walk-a-thon, and Stroll for Sudan was born.

Finding the charity our proceeds would go to was a no-brainer. I have participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine through my church’s youth group for years, and they were one of the first websites I went to after discovering the conflict in Darfur. Sure enough, they had a special section for humanitarian relief in Darfur on their homepage. Later, when I called to make the donation of almost $4,700, I was blown away by the friendly service and respect I received from World Vision’s staff.

We held meetings in the afternoon at my church. My pastor graciously allowed us to use their building as our headquarters as well as letting us run our money through their books, ensuring that all donations would be tax deductible. Every staff member (ages 13-16) received a job. Some were in charge of contacting churches and schools. Others were to collect monetary or product donations from local business. Still others were in charge of signs, press, and t-shirt design and printing. Parents were supportive and helpful in the planning process as well. Especially since most of our volunteers didn’t own a driver’s license. This is the kind of thing that allows you to see who your friends truly are.

The day of the event dawned cloudy and ominous, but the rain held off until after we were done with our 3.3 mile walk. Our two speakers were Sachin Chheda of the Darfur Action Coalition of Wisconsin and Ibrahim Musa, who once lived in Darfur and still visits family there. They were wonderful and added a lot to the event. Hotdogs, chips, and bottled water were donated and free for the walkers. Once we had collected pledges, freewill offerings, and outside donations, the amount totaled about $4,700. We plan on doing a similar event next year.
